TRS Healthcare Professional  Arit Ekobena will return to the heart of Africa to comfort and restore the lives of those who might not otherwise receive medical treatment.  She’ll work in Cameroon as a missionary with her husband, Denis, after completing her travel assignments in the United States. Arit, who was born in Limbe, Cameroon, and Denis have established African Leadership Development Centera nonprofit organization working to develop African leaders.

Arit has volunteered her time with the organization to comfort and restore the lives of patients at clinics across the country.  She has screened them for medical issues such as high blood pressure or cancer and determined whether a referral to a doctor is necessary. Many of those whom she treats would not have otherwise sought medical treatment because they cannot afford it. She’s also helped to educate healthcare workers who often don’t have the necessary equipment to do their jobs.

Because medical supplies haven’t been readily available, she’s always looked for more to provide better patient care. Improving patient care has been something that’s very important to her, especially in rural areas. Her long-term goal has been to become a nurse practitioner and establish a clinic in rural Cameroon. “Right now we are based in the capital,” which is Yaounde, she said. She was in Cameroon for six months before returning to the United States this past spring for a travel assignment. She has plans go back to the country in which she was born this fall.

Arit has lived in the United States for 15 years, been a U.S. citizen for four years, and an RN for 10 years. “Healthcare has always been my passion,” she said. We’re so glad she chose travel nursing to provide her the opportunity to volunteer as a nurse in Cameroon. It’s really awesome that she’s fulfilling TRS’ mission to comfort and restore lives in both the United States and Africa. Along with her healthcare ministry, she and her family also have a primary school and an outreach program for children.
